Beer Tasting – The Market @Washington & High 4/25/2011

I’m ashamed to say that I haven’t been to a beer tasting at The Market in several weeks – over a month actually. No excuse really, life just keeps getting in the way. However, when I saw that there was a rare Monday night tasting featuring New Belgium and Marble City Brewing Company I signed right up.

I should have known things were awry when I left the house and forgot my notebook, so tasting notes I don’t have this time. I remembered my growler (got a free fill up tonight!) and my wife’s olive oil container which also needed filling but forgot my notebook. The camera, remembered that. Did I take a picture of dinner? No. The beer? No. Why? Well, I was hungry and by the time I remembered I hadn’t taken a picture of the food, I had eaten every bit of it. Let me tell you this though – probably THE BEST meal I’ve had there to date. Sweet corn, potato salad, fresh local strawberries and….are you ready for this….baby back ribs. The ribs were TERRIBLE – they were full of flavor, juicy, came right off the bone…you would’ve hated them.

There was to be a rep from New Belgium and one from Marble City Brewing Company tonight but the stars weren’t lined up and neither were able to make it. The best laid plans of mice and men….

The beer though, the beer we did taste. On deck was the New Belgium line up consisting of Fat Tire, Somersault and one of my favorites, 1554. Of those three Somersault was new to me – interesting beer – light with a lemon taste. If you like lemon and like sour, this beer will make you pucker a bit. We also had some Summer Wheat beer from the head brewer at Marble City Brewing Company – very tasty.

Even though things didn’t go as planned we still had a great time. While the beer is what brings us all together it’s night’s like tonight that I am reminded why I enjoy these events so much – it’s the people. Meeting new people who love beer, hearing what they like and seeing those that we know and know us. Of course, it’s always great to see Mike and Todd as well.

So while this beer snob didn’t have is ducks in a row, still a great night and a wonderful tasting at The Market @ Washington & High.

Cheers!
